“It ain’t over till it’s over.” So said Yogi Berra. I learned that the hard way on Saturday evening. Penny and I were visiting with Tyler in Tuscaloosa. We were watching the UT-Georgia game with extreme interest as the game was in the balance. We planned to go in to the Alabama -Kentucky game after the UT game concluded. Except that I gave up hope when Georgia hit their touchdown with 10 seconds to go. The people in the restaurant changed the station to the beginning of the Alabama game and I quietly accepted “defeat” as we headed over to see Alabama and Kentucky play. I even sent a couple of texts to friends expressing my disappointment.
My phone rang and Chris’ number showed up. I knew we would share a bit of disappointment but I could not believe what he said: “We won!” I could hardly believe it but his tone of voice told me it was true. Tyler and I were the happiest fans in the shadow of Bryant-Denny Stadium. We watched the final play again and again. It really happened. Yogi was right. “It ain’t over till it’s over!”
That is true in more important dimensions of life than football. No matter what stage of life you find yourself enjoying, please remember, “It ain’t over till it’s over!” God has more in store for you than you can imagine. Just don’t do what I did and give up on what God has in store for you.
Sunday we will resume our series on “Building Strong Character” as we consider the theme of trust. Thanks to Danny for preaching while I was away. I know you were blessed by his good words.
