Many of you have been asking what we know about our friends in Gatlinburg.
Here is what we know today (Sunday evening). It appears that about 20 families in First Baptist Gatlinburg have lost their homes. The church also lost its youth building. Other congregations have lost their entire church buildings. Hundreds of people have lost their homes, businesses and jobs.
Life will never be the same again for hundreds of people, particularly those who lost loved ones.
As you may have read, there has been an incredible response to the immediate need. In fact, it seems there may be more supplies of some items than can be used.
How can we respond? This is a long-term recovery project. In the short term if you want to help a family in need at Christmas I will have a list in a couple of days with instructions on how individuals can help. Our church leadership is investigating how we can help as a church.
In the meantime, please pray for those who are struggling from day to day.
Pray for those who are working around the clock to bring a sense of normalcy. These are dear people who are very much like us. A week ago their lives were normal. Now they face the challenge of their lives.
I look forward to seeing you on Sunday as we continue our look at the stories behind the carols.
