Mission Kingsport Tutoring Ministry has been around for over 11 years and has students tutored on Tuesday afternoons.
Tutors arrive at First Baptist Church before the students. During this time, Pam Davis covers the skills the tutors will need to utilize to help student's with their homework that day.
Some of the other things tutors may be asked to do include being a "shotgun rider" on the bus that picks the students up from school and takes them home at 4:00 p.m. For safety purposes, there must be two adults on the bus.
Students come from John Sevier Middle School and are identified by their math teachers as needing extra help with their math skills.
This is a one-on-one tutoring session. And as a tutor, you will be assigned a student to work with during the year. If you are out of town on a Tuesday, your student will work with someone else and return to you when you get back in town.
If your appointed student is absent and we don't need you to tutor a different student, you may be sent home. Please don't take this negatively.
The teachers and principal will be working on their end to encourage students to come to tutoring. One of the reasons they are having problems is because they DON'T follow through.
Joe Davison, Jerry Schlather, Teli Marshall, Paulette Fielden, and Larry Gillenwater have been involved with this Tutoring Ministry for several years and are happy to talk with you about their experiences.
The number of students we serve per year is determined by the number of tutors that have signed up.
Please pray about becoming involved in this very hands-on ministry!
If you are interested in signing up, please click the tutoring application button below. You can call Marjorie Sink if you have any questions and can email her the application or drop it off at the church office. Her email address and phone number are below, as well.
Please know that all adults working with children are required to pass a background check. Follow directions on the application to do this.
