We begin Advent this Sunday. Advent is a time of spiritual preparation for Christmas. During these four Sundays we will take time to focus on preparation as a church family and as individuals. This year’s sermon series theme for Advent is “What Can I Give Him?” We will take a look at some people who gave “gifts” to the infant Jesus. We will look at the traditional gift-givers, the Wise Men. We will also look at some others who gave him gifts that might have been different than those delivered by the Magi. We will see the gifts of the shepherds, of Mary and Joseph and of John the Baptist. We will also talk about the gift of “obedience.” I hope you will be here each Sunday during Advent so that your Christmas celebration will be one that is informed by a heightened sense of the spirit in your life.
There are so many FBC Christmas traditions that I love. The decorating of the Sanctuary will take place soon as our primary place of worship is transformed into an even more beautiful place to meet God. Our Atrium will be filled each Sunday with special music designed to help us enjoy this season. The songs of Christmas will fill the air in our worship services. The Service of Remembrance will allow us to remember those who have entered the eternal presence of God. Our Living Nativity will be a witness of the love of Christ to our entire community. Christmas Eve services will again remind us that Jesus is the “Light of the world.”
I look forward to seeing you on Sunday when we remember the gifts of the Magi,
