What do you enjoy most about summer? Is it the absence of school? Maybe that is the answer for teachers and students! Is it a trip to the beach or the mountains? Lots of our folks are traveling this summer. For me, one of the things I enjoy most about summer is the music that surrounds the Fourth of July. I do my best to find a couple of televised concerts around the Fourth. One is the concert from Washington, D. C. There is something about hearing the music of America with the Capitol in the background. The other is the annual Boston Pops concert. I enjoy hearing “The Stars and Stripes Forever” about as much as any piece of music I know.
What does the Fourth bring to mind for you? Is it baseball? Apple pie? Waving a flag? Or is it something more profound than all this? Is it a brief moment of national unity in the middle of so much division? It seems we Americans hardly agree on anything anymore, doesn’t it? This Sunday we will think together about how Christians should act in a time of division in our nation. What should be our role? How do we speak a word of truth in a world that so often seems to shrink from the truth?
I hope you will be in your place on Sunday as we ponder how we can make a difference for good in our nation. I think we can make a difference, don’t you?
