This week mark’s Danny Silvey’s 15th anniversary on our staff. When Danny and Cindy arrived in Kingsport Kate and Nathan were toddlers. Now Kate is in college and Nathan is a junior at D-B. How time flies! During these fleeting 15 years Danny, Cindy, Kate and Nathan have become a vital part of the fabric of our fellowship at First Baptist Church.
For the first 14 years of his time with us Danny served as our Minister to Students. He worked diligently and faithfully to develop a sound, scripture-based youth ministry. Our young people left for college after 7 years with Danny prepared to face the challenges they would face there. He built a sound program that allowed our students to grow in grace on mission trips and in fellowship events through every year. One testimony to his effectiveness is the number of youth who have felt God’s call into vocational ministry.
In the last year Danny has assumed a new role as our Associate Pastor/ Minister to Young Adults. Danny is now laying the groundwork for our church to reach a new generation. Over the last year much of his time has been spent as the unofficial technology adviser as we built our new building. Danny has spent countless hours making sure that our building met our hopes in providing opportunities to learn through using the most up-to-date technology.
In the months and years to come Danny will be working to find new ways to attract and integrate young adults into the life of our congregation. The completion of the technology of the new building will give him time to focus exclusively on that. I know you join me in praying that his efforts will be of benefit to young people and to our church.
Danny never tries to draw attention to himself in ministry. You won’t be surprised to learn that he doesn’t want any “celebration” of his service. But I did impose on him to let you know of this special time in his ministry. Be sure to say “thanks” when you encounter him quietly doing the work of the Lord.
I look forward to seeing you on Sunday as we continue to see Jesus through the eyes of the Gospel of John,
